Karst environment

The predominantly limestone nature of the rocks that make up the Berici Hills has favored the formation of cavities, sinkholes, and dolines through karstification, the chemical dissolution of rock caused by rainwater.

In the Berici Mountains, karst environments are particularly important due to the characteristics and rarity of the flora and fauna found there, such as the Saxifraga berica, endemic to the hills.

In this room, you can observe the inhabitants of this unique ecosystem, from cave-dwelling insects, often endemic, with their adaptations to life in the darkness, to the distinctive vegetation of the rocks and that of the slopes of the sinkholes, the latter closely linked to the microclimate developing within them.
