Morphology and geology of the Berici Hills
A visit to the Museum starts with observation of a scale model of the Berici Hills, which allows the visitor to learn about the morphological conformation of this hilly massif and to identify the location of the main archaeological sites that provided the materials on show in the Archaeological Section.
The Geology room is laid out with chronostratigraphic displays where every sedimentary sequence, tectonic or volcanic event is described in detail. Explanation of these phenomena is provided by palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, geographic extension of the main areas of sedimentation, stratigraphic columns with description of the different rocks and their relative palaeontological content and photos of current environments where today sedimentations occur that are similar to those in the Vicenza area millions of years ago.
Here it is possible to observe deposits of Scaglia Rossa from the Cretaceous Period, nummulitic limestone from the Eocene Period, basaltic lava from the nearby Lessini mountains, aquatic plants and marine invertebrates right through to the great vertebrates who lived during the Palaeolithic and Neolithic Periods and the Bronze Age.
